What Do Alternators Do?
Your vehicle's battery isn't the only component that powers the electrical parts of your vehicle. The alternator is also responsible since it turns mechanical energy into electrical energy. Alternators also control the radio, power windows and locks, and the windshield wipers. It's made up of four components: rotor, stator, diode, and voltage regulator.
How Do I Know If My Alternator is Failing?
Eventually, your alternator may start to go bad and eventually fail. Once it does, you'll want to replace it as soon as you can before the problem gets worse. Some of the signs of a failing alternator include:
- Dimming or flickering headlights
- Whining noises coming from your engine
- Power windows are not working
- The entertainment system or electronics are starting to act up
- Dead car battery
